2011 BREEAM Award winners for Healthcare Wales

GBSPM and the Loudoun Square team won BREEAM award for highest scoring healthcare in Wales.

Breeam Awards 2011 - BREEAM Healthcare ExcellentA new state of the art healthcare centre, currently under development at Loudoun Square in Cardiff, is the first healthcare building in Wales to attain a prestigious award for its sustainable design features.

The design which includes a biomass boiler to heat and power the building, high standards of insulation, a water harvesting system, effective Site controls and Management, water efficient sanitaryware and environmentally sourced materials, has achieved the first BREEAM Excellent standard in Wales.  This is the third consecutive BREEAM Award received by the company.

The healthcare centre is a key part of the £13 million redevelopment of Cardiff’s Loudoun Square in Butetown which is set to transform the lives of local residents and breathe new life into the area. Once complete in spring 2013 the development will deliver the health centre, 62 affordable homes, a community hub and a new shopping parade, all of which are designed and are being built to the highest environmental standards.

The ambitious project is a collaboration between Cardiff Community Housing Association (CCHA), Cardiff Council and the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, and is being built by the Leadbitter Group.

The team collected the Award at the prestigious Constructing Excellence Awards last night from Nick Tune of the BRE

Kevin Protheroe Chief Executive of CCHA, said: “We are delighted that the scheme has attained BREEAM Excellent status. It has many environmental features which will provide long-term benefits for those living and working in Loudoun Square”

The BREEAM Coordinators for the scheme were GBSPM Ltd, BREEAM Award winners for the last 3 years. Gordon Brown, the Sustainability Director said:  “It is wonderful to work with a forward thinking client and team. With the client driving the sustainable elements of the scheme from the outset, ensuring the BREEAM Excellent was the objective and not the defunct NEAT requirements. Their understanding of the value of good design and construction rather than solely concentrating on initial costs resulted in achieving the top level of Excellent."
