UK BREEAM AWARDS 2013
GBSPM win again!
Llys Ton, Multi-Residential Extra Care Housing Facility, Bridgend
In the Ecobuild Conference, London on Tuesday 5th March Gordon Brown and the GBSPM Team received their 4th BREEAM Award in their 6th Year of Trading, for Llys Ton, Extra Care Housing Facility, the Highest BREEAM Scoring Multi-Residential Building in UK 2013.
Llys Ton Extra Care in Kenfig Hill, Bridgend is a residential facility for older people. It was conceived with the aim of establishing community spirit and encouraging independent living – providing ‘homes for life’. The centre includes state-of-the-art communal facilities along with 39 self contained flats arranged around a landscaped central courtyard.
Llys Ton is located close to the centre of Kenfig Hill in the residential neighbourhood of Waun Bant Road. This project was funded by Valleys to Coast Housing Association in partnership with Bridgend County Borough Council. The project achieved a BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’ in July 2012.
From the very first stages of design, a sustainable approach was implemented by the architects at Pentan, to reduce energy consumption and fuel bills. The design of the building maximises natural light and solar gains to both flats and communal areas; the majority are South East or South West facing to promote passive solar gain and encourage natural ventilation – particularly of the central double height space. Light ‘towers’ drive natural light into the deeper plan parts of the building. Other sustainable features include environmentally friendly heating alternatives, low water use fittings and the use of construction materials with a low environmental impact.
